WE CAN pray

Praying is something we all CAN do. We can pray for asylum seekers we know or don’t know, for greater compassion from our decision makers, for the safety and wellbeing of people on the journey and living in hardship and for endurance of people supporting asylum seekers.

Prayer can be simple, creative or structured . . . so long as it is from the heart.

“When coming from the heart, we know that prayer works miracles.”

Pope Francis, Oct. 8, 2014

Here are just a few examples of prayers that can be said alone, with friends, as part of prayers of the faithful or on special occasions such as Migrant and Refugee Sunday (last Sunday of August) or Social Justice Sunday (last Sunday of September).

 SUGGESTED PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

For Pope Francis, our Bishops, and all those who minister in the Church. That they may guide the Church with wisdom and holiness through the works of Faith, Hope and Charity.

Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our Prayer

For the Church. That in our deeds, we may be a witness of the sanctifying and sacrificial love of Christ.

Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our Prayer

For migrants, refugees, and international students. That we may work with them, attentive to their needs and promoting their innate dignity as children of God.

Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our Prayer

For our political leaders, legislators, and those in public office. May they enhance laws that welcome, protect, promote, and integrate migrants and refugees.

Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our Prayer

For those who minister to migrants, refugees, and international students. That they may find strength and courage in the words of the Lord, who says, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me”.

Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our Prayer

For those who have died. In particular those seeking safety and peace. May God’s merciful love shine on them and their loved ones left behind.

Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our Prayer

PRAYERS FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS

A prayer for asylum seekers

Lord, No one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care. In your kindness watch over refugees and asylum seekers, those separated from their loved ones, those who are lost, and those who have been exiled from their homes. Bring them safely to the place where they long to be, and help us always to show your kindness to strangers and those in need.

A prayer for asylum seekers and refugees

Wise and compassionate God, help us to bear the burdens refugees and asylum-seekers carry and not simply seek to shift the burden onto others.

Call our leaders to justice, generosity and compassion. Help them create and implement strategies that are fair and just and treat refugees and asylum-seekers with dignity and care.

O God, our comforter, we ask you to comfort the broken-hearted and protect the vulnerable. We pray for those who live in fear of detention and removal, for those who are in detention at this time and for those who face removal to an uncertain future. We ask you to assure them of your great love, surround them with your presence and fill them with your peace.

God bless our eyes so that we will recognise injustices. God bless our ears so that we will hear the cry of the stranger. God bless our mouths so that we will speak words of welcome to newcomers. God bless our shoulders so we will be able to bear the weight of struggling for justice. God bless our hands so that we can work together with all people to establish peace.

Prayer for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers

God, no one is stranger to you

And no one is ever far from your loving care.

In your kindness watch over migrants, refugees and asylum seekers,

Those separated from their loved ones,

Those who are lost

And those who have been exiled from their homes.

Bring them safely to the place where they long to be,

And help us always to show your kindness to strangers

And those in need.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,

Who too was a refugee and migrant

Who travelled to another land

Searching for a home.

Amen

 Prayer for asylum seekers

Reconciling God, we pray for the day when all Australians stand together

Recognising that we are called as one people to compassion and justice.

Heal the blindness that looks but does not see, the deafness which refuses to listen and so does not hear, the dullness which hears but does not comprehend, and the lack of integrity that knows but does not act.

God, in your love and solidarity you call us to stand with those who are most vulnerable, especially asylum seekers who risk all to find protection and a secure future for their families.

Hear our prayer and the unuttered cries of our hearts offered in the name of your son,

Jesus, who was himself a refugee. Amen.
